Compliance Flows Summary
Compliance Flow (CF) Values are effective for 24 hrs starting at 09:00am 01 Oct 2023.
We’ve “modernised” the look and feel of the website, but the overall functionality is the same.
We’ve created a Daily Climate Maps tab and this tab contains lot of new features.
There’s a table of hourly rainfall totals for the last 24 hours. The colours of each cell change according to the hourly total.
There are two interactive maps that show the spatial distribution of rainfall over the region. The Rain 1H map shows rainfall totals for each of the last 24 hours. The Rain 24H map shows a rolling 24 hour accumulation for each of the last 24 hours.
There are two rainfall anomaly maps; they show where the total rainfall has been higher or lower than the average for the same period in previous years.
There are two soil moisture anomaly maps; they show where soil moisture levels are higher or lower than the average for the same period in previous years.
The 'Additional information about...' popup now shows a Site Administrator comment about the measurement site, if one has been set. This is in addition to the general measurement site comment.
Site Statistics
We have added new statistics for flow data. You can now see low flow and flood return period levels.
Site Information
Underneath the available date range, there is a link to view information about the site. If there's no link, then there's no information available! We will endeavour to update these over time.
Site Statistics
There is a new section called Site Statistics, we have added the minimum, maximum and mean values for each year of record for some measurements (Stage and Flow for starters). Watch this space for more enhancements.
Note: At the moment these statistics are calculated on the fly and cover the full range of data. Some flow monitoring stations have only been calibrated for flood flows and show incorrect readings at low flows, so use these statistics with caution. We are working towards filtering this incorrect data out of the statistics.
Envelope Graphs
Soil moisture content can now be graphed using two options; a line graph and now also as an envelope plot. An envelope plot has the current data over-plotted with the historic range, so you can easily compare the current values against historic minimums and maximums. Note that the date range has two options; either July to June or the last 12 months, and that the date range selectors have been disabled for this type of graph.
Tip: Click the legend to turn any unwanted graph traces on or off.
Graph Interval Options
You can now graph (and download) incremental data (such as rainfall) using more interval options, for example hourly, daily, monthly, annual and cumulative. Additionally, the current year’s rainfall data can be over-plotted with the past 3 years as a comparison (use the Cumulative (Historic) option).
Mean daily flow values can also be plotted and downloaded.
Note that for the Cumulative (Historic) graphing option, the date range has two options; either July to June or for the last 12 months, the date range selectors have been disabled, the tabular data section has been disabled, and lastly, zooming has been disabled for now as we are still working on getting the zoomed graph plotting correctly.
Tip: Click the legend to turn any unwanted graph traces on or off.
Tip: You can list cumulative data in the Tabular Data section by selecting the Cumulative interval option.
Quality Codes
Some graph traces are now coloured according to the quality of the data. Tabular data and downloaded data have the quality code listed as well. See the links for quality code explanations.
Tip: Recent data is of lessor quality (QC200) as it has not been through our verification process yet.
Note: Not all of our measurements are assigned quality codes. We are gradually implementing these as standards are developed and as resourcing allows.

New Zealand Standard Time
We collect all our data to New Zealand Standard Time (NZST), so in the summer months our latest data may appear to be a little behind.
Tip: During the period of daylight savings, add 1 hour to this data to align it to Daylight Savings Time (DST).
Graph Date Range
The larger the length of data collected, the longer it will take to graph, show in the Tabular Data section and to download. We have a large data range warning when the date range is set to be more than 1 year. If you are prepared to wait, click the “Proceed” button. It is not advisable to download the entire record for a particular measurement; we can manually supply large data sets on request.
Downloading the Graph or Tabular Data
You must read and accept the terms and conditions to activate the Download buttons.
Minimise the Graph Labels
You can “minimise” the Latest and Water Take Compliance Flow labels by clicking the small boxes with a “negative” symbol at the extreme right of the labels. Click the “plus” symbol to get the labels back.
Using the Navigator
You can use the navigator (the small graph below the main graph) to zoom in and pan along the range of data. Drag the handles in from each end then click and move your mouse left or right to pan.
Easy Site Searching
You can choose your site by typing any part of the name into the site selector box. For example, to find the Akatarawa River at Cemetery site, you can find it by simply typing “cem”.
Tip: You can use the Site and Measurement Selectors in either the Map or Graph sections.
Bookmarking Your Favourite Site/Measurement
If you have a favourite site and measurement, you can bookmark this page in your browser to save searching for it next time.
A Note or Two on Measurements
Some measurements are collected using data loggers and most of these are telemetered, which means that the data is retrieved at regular intervals (as often as half hourly). Other measurements (mostly water quality data) are collected weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on the monitoring programme. These data take a little longer to get on our archive (and the website) as the data is analysed at a laboratory and then quality assured before being posted to our archive.
Our telemetered data is available on our website immediately following its retrieval. This means that we have not had a chance to verify the accuracy of the data. Limited verification is undertaken on a daily basis, however full verification is not possible until a site visit is undertaken. The data displayed on our website is often a combination of verified and unverified (quality assured) data, the quality of the data is shown using colours on the graphs, and codes in the data listings/downloads.
The Map Section
You can either select a site from the site selector box or click any data “type” to activate the site pins on the map. For example, click the Groundwater Levels and Rainfall buttons to activate the pins for sites that measure groundwater levels or rainfall. Click a locator pin on the map to view data from that site, and then choose a measurement.
Tip: Any combination of data types can be selected or de-selected. Note that we often collect more than one measurement at each site.
